Dinning
Montreal’s food scene is as affordable as it is varied. Lowering the costs further, we also have “BYOW = bring your own wine” restaurants – meaning you buy your bottle of choice from anywhere you want (which can cost as little as $8-10) and drink it at the restaurant at no extra cost!. We suggest buying from grocery stores or the SAQ (Quebec’s liquor commission) for best value. Note, however, that not all restaurants have the BYOW option – it must be specified.
There are some areas where these BYOW restaurants are particularly concentrated: on Prince Arthur between Saint-Laurent and Saint-Denis, as well as on Duluth Street between Saint-Laurent and Berri.
Our Picks
In our neighbourhood, 2-10 minute walk:
Lola Rosa, 545 Milton – international-inspired vegetarian dishes are served in a cozy, homey atmosphere
Amelio’s, 201 Milton – Amazing Italian pizzas and pastas, BYOW, cash only. Small place that gets full quickly, so optimal for an early dinner. Closed Mondays. (website)
Alto’s, 3462 ave. du Parc – Typical diner with relatively good salads, pastas, subs, pizzas, hamburgers. Open 24 hours and deliver too! (website)
Café Bistro El Mundo, 3500 ave. du Parc – Small café with outdoor chairs, fresh sandwiches and salads, good coffee and pastries, free wi-fi.
Ocean Sushi, 3751 St-Urbain – Good value for fresh sushi, but not the most inviting in terms of décor.
Essence, 2001 University – Upscale restaurant with modern and good quality dishes at reasonable prices, popular among the business crowd. Have outdoor seating available, but on a very busy street. (website)
